Seeing God
A lot of mankind is so tied to the physical world in which we live, that they have a difficult time perceiving, recognizing and believing in a Spiritual God. John 4:24a reveals that, "God is Spirit."
When Moses was on Mount Sinai with the Lord, he asked the Lord to show him His glory. The Lord responded with "You cannot see My face, for no man shall see Me; and live." The Lord then directed Moses to go into the cleft of a rock and covered him with His hand while He passed by. Then the Lord took away His hand and Moses looked upon His back.
So, even though Moses did not see a physical manifestation of God, he saw God's glory (weight, splendour).
God reveals Himself to us in many ways. We can see Him through His Word, through those people who are His, as they reflect His nature to those around them, and we learn of Him through revelation given by the Holy Spirit. Another way we see God, is through a general revelation of Himself in His creation.
Today, we will focus on what the Scripture says concerning how we see God through His creation. Let us look at what the Word of God says in Colossians 1:16, "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him." God created everything that exists.
Then, Psalm 19:1 (New International Version) reads, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."
Ephesians 2:10a states that "We are His workmanship." The Greek word for 'workmanship' is poiema, and when used in regard to God's creation of man and the universe, it signifies one whose work is a design produced by an artisan, or by one who is the Master Designer.
God reveals Himself to us through those things He has created.
One of the favorite hymns sung in churches is, "How Great Thou Art" by Stuart Wesley Keene Hine. Here is a portion of that song.
How Great Thou Art
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze,
(Chorus)
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Psalm 19:1-6 in the New Living Translation reads, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. 2 Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. 3 They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. 4 Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun. 5 It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. 6 The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from it’s heat.”
Psalm 95:1-6 (NLT) also proclaims, "Come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. 3 For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods. 4 He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. 5 The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too. 6 Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the LORD our maker"
All that we can see of God's creation, the visible and even the invisible, reveals His existence, power and glory to us.
When I take our dog out on a clear night and see the expanse of our galaxy, and even the endlessness of space, I cannot help but be in awe of the One, Who created it all, by speaking it into existence. John 1:1-3 (New American Standard Bible 20), "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being." Numerous times, we read in the Creation account in Genesis 1, "Then God said..."
Astronomers tell us that some of the stars we see at night are actually galaxies! Even in our limited knowledge, according to NASA Science Space Place's web site, "The Hubble Space Telescope looked at a small patch of space for 12 days and found 10,000 galaxies of all sizes , shapes, and colors. some scientists think there could be as many as one hundred billion galaxies in the universe." Wow! How awesome is our God!
In Isaiah 6 we read of the seraphim, that, "one cried to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory." Having traveled to many places, I have seen mountains, great rivers, deserts, forests and canyons and have never failed to be in awe of God's creation. Realize that, according to the Word of God that we have been reading, every time you look at the creation of God, you are seeing His glory!
Psalm 139 verses 13 and 14 reads, "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well." The word 'covered' in verse 13 is the Hebrew word, sakah, which means weave together. We could read the second part of verse 13 as, "You did weave me together in my mother's womb." Take a few minutes to contemplate about the way our body was created. Look at your hands and visualize how the brain sends messages through the nerves to the tissue and muscles, which enables us to move and use our fingers and thumbs to perform whatever task we desire them to perform.
Think of all of your internal organs, each in a specific location, with a specific function, all working together, and filled with the Life of God! It is astounding!
Consider the intellect of man, remembering that we were made in His image. It is mind boggling to realize the Lord bestowed a creative mind on mankind, as demonstrated by the amazing inventions we see and use, i.e.. electricity, tools, automobiles, airplanes, telephones, computers, and WIFI, to name a few.
All of nature is included in God's creation. This includes our animal friends, who also show a presence of intelligence, plants, flowers, fruit, and trees. Reflect on an apple... it is created with three parts, the skin, flesh or fruit, and the seeds, which reveals the Godhead, the Three in One... the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
As we look at creation and come to realize how powerful God is, we are assured that He is able to care for us. Matthew 6:26-29 (NLT), " Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? 28 "And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are."
When you have studied the work of a Master artist, there comes a time when there is no need to see the signature on the finished masterpiece. You learn to recognize and know the artist by his work. The Lord God, is the Master Designer. Not only is He the Designer of the universe, He is the Designer of you. Once you have come to know that God reveals Himself through His creation, you will see God! When you see that tremendous sunrise or sunset, you will know that you are looking at His handiwork.
I will close by sharing two verses of a contemporary song written by Phil Wickham.
You're Beautiful
I see Your face in every sunrise
The colors of the morning are inside your eyes
The world awakens in the light of the day
I look up to the sky and say
You're beautiful
(Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh)
I see Your power in the moonlit night
Where planets are in motion and galaxies are bright
We are amazed in the light of the stars
It's all proclaiming who You are
You're beautiful
(Oh, Oh, You're beautiful, Oh, Oh)
Be blessed as you realize that every time you look at all of His creation, including yourself, you are seeing God, His handiwork, and His glory!
