God’s Promises Are “Yes!”

Greetings! I am so glad you joined me today. Our topic is pretty exciting, especially when we understand that the Promises of God are His will for you! I pray the Lord will increase your desire to know His Word and that, His Word will conform you more into His image every day. Eric

Some time ago, I wrote a similar post on the subject of His promises. Repetition is one of our greatest teachers. The Scripture tells us to “meditate” on the Word day and night. (Joshua 1:8). The word, ‘meditate’ means: to mutter out loud and to repeat. We can never hear too much of the Word of God. Psalm 119:11 (NKJV) reads, “Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.”

I am going to lay some groundwork before getting into our topic of “Promises” today.

God desires that we walk and live in His truth and knowledge.

Jesus was praying to the Father for his disciples and us, when He said in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in truth, your word is truth.” Paul penned these words in Titus 1:1 and 2, “Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began” God cannot lie. He does makes promises. Then, we read that the Spirit of God, Who is truth, imbues men with the understanding of truth in 1 John 5:6. I am so thankful for the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives! He teaches us concerning our learning the truth of God’s Word!

1 Samuel 2:3b reads, “for the Lord is a God of “knowledge.” Then we read in Numbers 24:16, “the oracles of him who hear the words of God, and knows the knowledge of the Most High.” ‘Knowledge’ in this verse (daath in the Hebrew) means: knowledge, perception, discernment, skill, understanding, and wisdom. How awesome is that? We believers, as hearers of the Word, can know or have the perception, discernment, skill, understanding, and wisdom of the Most High! The Lord and His Word are the source of and foundation of truth and knowledge!

Deuteronomy 8:3c, “…man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” The Hebrew word for ‘lives’ is haya which means sustain life, live on or upon. God’s Word is where our earthly and eternal life is created and sustained!

Knowing that, we must learn to depend upon and obey the Word of God in every facet of our lives, whether great or small.

We have established in the Scriptures today that the Spirit of God and His Word are truth and that God cannot lie.

We will look at one more scripture before getting into our ’topic’ for the day. Isaiah has another significant verse, when we consider and study the promises of God, Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV), “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. The Hebrew word translated ’void’ means: in vain, or without effect. ‘Accomplish’ means to prosper and succeed. Every word which God speaks will accomplish what He intends it to accomplish.

The fact is, we must believe what God, through His Word, has said. You see, without faith, it is impossible to please God. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” ‘Impossible,’ adynatos in the Greek, means: cannot do, not possible, unable. If we do not have faith in God, we will never please Him. In believing, we receive the promise as ours.

Mark 11:20-24, “As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered." 22 And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” ‘Doubt’ in the Greek means: waver or withdraw from. If we do not doubt but believe in our hearts, it will come to pass.

James 1:5-8, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” We must pray in faith without doubting to receive from the Lord.

Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 1:19 and 20 (NLT), “ For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between "Yes" and "No." He is the one whom Silas, Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God's ultimate "Yes," he always does what he says. 20 For all of God's promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding "Yes!" And through Christ, our "Amen" (which means "Yes") ascends to God for his glory.” The promises of God are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He is God’s ultimate “Yes!” God’s promises are not a ‘maybe’ but are always the dependable assurance. ‘Promises,’ epangelia in the Greek, means: a divine assurance of good. The root word of epangelia is epangellomai, meaning: to announce that one is about to do or to furnish something. This scripturally defines what a ‘promise’ is in the Word of God. It is a divine assurance of good and blessings with God announcing that He is about to do or furnish something. “Yes” means, most assuredly, what was promised has come to pass or has been fulfilled.

We have confidence in prayer because of His promises in His Word. 1 John 5:14 and 15, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” ‘Confidence,’ parresia means free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage, assurance and boldness.

Christ’s coming, life, death, and resurrection was the confirmation or establishment of God’s promises to the people of the Old Testament. Romans 15:8 reveals, “For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,” ‘Confirm’ means to establish, make sure, and fulfill them!

God’s promises are numerous. It is impossible to look at them all here, however, we will gain some insight into what the Word of God says about the promises of God, then focus on a few of them.

The first promise spoken by God following the ‘fall’ is in Genesis 3:15, “ I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." What was the promise? “The seed of woman would some day crush the serpent’s head. Most specifically, the Lord Jesus has trampled satan at the cross.” (New Spirit Filled Life Bible, Word Wealth)

From that first promise made, God has been faithful to fulfill His Word.

Praise God, we read in Galatians 3:13,14, and 29, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree"-- 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. ... 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.” We are redeemed from the curse of the law and we are heirs according to His promise!

1 Corinthians 15:42-45 reads, “So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”

Revelation 20:10 reveals, “and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” This is the last promise we see in the Scriptures. It will come to pass.

We can look at God’s promises, from the first to the last, and know that each one is sure.

We must believe God and believe that what He speaks is absolute truth. Truth is not what we make it to be, neither is it ‘relative’, as some would deem it to be. Once again…The Word of God is absolute truth.

The Lord’s promises do not apply only to when we arrive in heaven, but they apply to us immediately, when we become believers in Christ. Ephesians 1:3 (NLT), “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.” John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” We have abundant life, even now.

Okay! Let’s spend a little time looking at some of God’s promises to His children.

He promises to provide for all our need. Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

He promises to save us. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

He promises to forgive us. 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

He promises to be with us forever. Hebrews 13:5c, “he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

He promises to give us wisdom. James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

He promises He is for us. Romans 8:31, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

He promises to empower us to fight our enemy (the devil or satan). 1 John 4:1 and 4 (NASB20), “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. ... 4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them (spirits not from God); because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

He promises that the weapons of our warfare are divinely powerful. 2 Corinthians 10:4 and 5, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. ... 4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

He promises we will be given authority over all the power of the enemy. Luke 10:19, “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”

He promises if we humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and repent, He will heal our land. 2 Chronicles 7:14, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

The promises of God are so plentiful that the only way to know them is to search for them in both the Old and New Testaments.

As you spend time in His Word, and find one of HIs promises, I encourage you to write it down, meditate on it and allow faith to arise so that you believe what He has promised!

His will, which we see through His promises, are for us!!

The only way we can know His will is for us to know His Word! I cannot encourage you enough to spend time in His Word. We don’t have to wonder what His will is. He has blessed us with the recording, preservation, and availability of His Word!

Some of the promises of God are conditional, i.e. Exodus 20:12 which tells us if we honor our father and mother, we may live a long life.

We receive the promises of God by faith, by perseverance, and obedience.

As a believer, the promises of God are for you!

In Jesus, the promises are “Yes”.

Press into the Word and claim what is yours through His Word!

Till next time, may you walk in His love, peace, and blessings.
